The network's Top New Show of This Year Gets a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
In October of last year, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, shortly thereafter, the channel unveiled a brand-new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns was gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a serene talk show. In an era often defined by bleakness, this show's sincerity resonated deeply and helped it become a breakout hit.
A Significant Investment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This gives creator Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to expand upon the story of the Campbell family. The series focuses on three polite teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I am overjoyed that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
A President's Endorsement
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and uniquely eerie." He thanked the fans who embraced the show and supported its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you supported this new show, rooted for it on social media, and grew it week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Wholesome Alternative
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about watching this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He attributed this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” explained Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal promises audiences additional episodes to bask in the warm glow of the endearing Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
