The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will Conclude... For Now.
The creative mastermind could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” he remarks. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the acclaimed series reaching its finale—and Season 2 officially in the works—Gilligan and his team reflected on the audience reaction and whether it will impact the narrative path of Pluribus.
About the Incredible Fan Response
Anyone might to get sidetracked by the constant speculation and online debates about Pluribus. The creator is doing his best to avoid both.
“It feels like an endless supply of hot fudge sundaes and being in a state of bliss,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's on purpose. Not once have I looked myself up on the internet, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would get lost in and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
In spite of trying to stay away, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to take it in stride and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not changed by online forums.”
“We prefer to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Will the creator See the Conclusion of Pluribus?
Considering Gilligan and his team aren't taking cues by public opinion, does it imply they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We've developed some interesting ideas about where the show might end up,” he states. “yet we stand ready to abandon a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in good stead on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if all else fails, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to use as a backup.
“I keep pitching that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and that's where they've been all along,” Smith jokes, “but no one is buying it.”
Alternatively, one could always use the iconic TV endings?
“My dream is Carol to awaken beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
