The Boss Enzo Maresca Labels Pre-Match Time as His 'Most Difficult Two Days' at the Blues

Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca stated that the run-up to Saturday's triumph against Everton constituted "the most challenging 48 hours" of his tenure with the London club.

The Italian delivered a rather mysterious message in his after-game media briefing despite securing a 2-0 win at home courtesy of finishes from Cole Palmer and Malo Gusto.

Those crucial points sent Chelsea back into the Premier League's top four, potentially improving the mood following a loss to Atalanta in the Champions League that had stretched the side's drought without a win to consecutive outings.

But, when questioned about the full-back's contribution and overall display, Maresca unexpectedly shared his frustration over the preceding 48-hour period within the organization.

"How the players are eager to develop has been excellent and this is the reason why I praise them - because with so many challenges, they are doing very well after a difficult week," he stated.

"From the moment I arrived at the club, the last 48 hours have been the worst because several people didn't support us."

When pushed further on what he meant, the former Leicester City manager continued: "Most difficult 48 hours since I came to the club because people failed to back me and the team."

When asked if he meant people within at Chelsea, he replied: "In general. In general," before specifying when asked if it was aimed at fans or the media: "I love the fans and we are extremely happy with the fans."

Fitness & Suspension Crisis

Maresca also highlighted Chelsea's persistent injury and disciplinary problems, remarking they had been without star attacker Cole Palmer for a large portion of the campaign, as well as being deprived of key midfielder Moises Caicedo to a three-game ban and forward Liam Delap to two serious injuries.

"I really applaud the players and the squad because we have played 16 Premier League games, five of them without Moises Caicedo, 11 of them minus Cole Palmer, nearly every one of them without Liam Delap," he explained.

"And this squad, regardless of who is playing, they are performing brilliantly. Today was 5 games in 12 days so certainly when you see Cole Palmer there, we have said many times that he's our top player but we play the vast majority of the season without our top player.

"We play 5 games in the Premier League without Moises Caicedo. This is the reason why I'm so pleased for the players and it's something that I would like people externally to recognize because the effort from the players is fantastic."

Chelsea's triumph over Everton strengthened their position in fourth in the Premier League table, with a Carabao Cup quarter-final clash at Cardiff and a league trip to Newcastle to come in the coming days.

Speculation Regarding Maresca's Comments

It was unclear what exactly caused Maresca to label the previous 48 hours as the worst of his tenure as Chelsea head coach.

In that period, the Italian had traveled back with his staff and players from his native Italy, held a session at the training ground, faced a pre-match news conference where he seemed at ease, and engineered a win over an in-form Everton team.

It was not obvious whether any particular media reports had unsettled him, if social media discourse were a factor, or if it was something more significant from within the hierarchy at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca specifically took care to rule out that it was an issue involving the club's fans, some of whom have not yet fully warm to him since his appointment from Leicester during July 2024.
