Senegal's Rising Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.
As I enter the space, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to until after the conversation. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” remarks the Monaco and Senegal midfielder.
His resolve and raw talent convinced teams such as Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure was not a sporting director or manager, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” says Camara.
Surmounting Initial Obstacles
Eventually, on “one beautiful day,” he received his dad's approval to chase his path in the sport. Another challenge was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.
Nevertheless, the famed academy – the club that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following he earned the MVP in a regional tournament, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was without a contract. They acted quickly. “I was taken straight to the training centre. They prevented me from returning home,” Camara said.
A Landmark Season and Continental Arrival
This move put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he played in the Under-20s Afcon, guiding his nation to the title and earning player of the tournament.
Soon after, he signed for FC Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Settling in wasn't a problem,” says the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a situation his family encourage to maintain his concentration.
Inspiration and Playing Style
Distractions aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional playing qualities. He is also a big admirer of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.
His powerful shot and precision from dead-ball situations are key strengths. He admits a need to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his tenures at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait that is following me!” he jokes.
Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions
With his current club, he values learning from teammates like Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I told myself we are fortunate,” Camara noted.
Right now, his focus is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the team to beat – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, pointing to a memorable 3-1 win in Nottingham.
On a potential transfer to the Premier League, he is focused on Monaco for now. “I feel really at ease here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the main top prize down the line.
“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England in their own country… it gives you confidence.”
Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions as he aims to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own legendary path in the game.
