Larry Summers Steps Down from AI Company's Directors
Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the board at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became widely known.
The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, optimistic about the promise of the company, and look forward tracking their development".
Summers, who previously led the Ivy League institution, declared on recently that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Jeffrey Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public emails revealed that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 arrest for alleged trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the technology organization said it respected his choice to step down.
"We value his many contributions and the insight he brought to the Board," OpenAI remarked.
Political Context
This announcement comes after the two houses of Congress voted on this week to endorse a measure that would mandate the Department of Justice to release its records on Epstein.
The measure will afterward head to the administration of President Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he expects to approve the measure, after modifying his position on the matter following pressure from his followers.
Email Contents
A collection of Epstein-connected correspondence disclosed by the legislative panel last week referenced multiple prominent individuals in the Epstein's past associates, without implying any illegal behavior by those figures.
The communications indicated that the professor and Epstein often met for meals, with the billionaire often attempting to connect the official to notable global figures.
Personal Accountability
After the emails were shared with the public, he expressed he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised judgment to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he hoped "to reestablish confidence and repair bonds with the persons nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor served in high-level positions under Democratic administrations; acting as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the National Economic Council under President Obama.
He headed the institution from the early 2000s and continues to be a professor there. When declaring his withdrawal from public duties recently on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.
Further Repercussions
Following Summers' announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning research organization in Washington where Summers was a prominent member, announced that the economist was ceased to be associated with the organization.
He became part of the board of the technology firm, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive Sam Altman.
