Hamilton Island, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Sold by American Investment Giant.
An iconic resort island located within the Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American private equity firm in a deal reportedly valued at 1.2 billion Australian dollars.
“We are honored to build on the vision and dedication that the Oatley family has established in the heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef,” stated a company executive.
The Reported Acquisition Agreement
The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – the owner of the hospitality group Crown Resorts – confirmed it had signed an agreement to acquire the Hamilton Island resort from the Oatley family, pending customary approvals from regulators.
The sellers released a statement saying they welcomed the change in ownership of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.
Hamilton Island's Scale and Features
Positioned roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares across two islands.
Roughly thirty percent of the land is developed, featuring a significant array of facilities:
- Five hotels
- More than 20 restaurants and bars
- 20 retail outlets
- An 18-hole championship golf course on adjacent Dent Island
- A marina and a functioning airport
The resort is described as a significant employer in the Whitsundays, sustaining a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.
Historical Context at Ownership
The deceased Robert Oatley, a renowned sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in the year 2003 after spotting the island from aboard a yacht while sailing through the Whitsundays.
The island's development boom initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by galvanised iron huts and more humble quarters that hosted Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

Blackstone also owns hotels and luxury resorts in several nations, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
The area is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro Indigenous people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the island group on Sunday 3 June 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
