American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are becoming strained," the official told a news outlet on the weekend, as certain aircraft were grounded on the Californian coast due to staffing shortages.

Following the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks due to climate and additional factors.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on the weekend, and the secretary stated he anticipates the situation to grow worse.
