Chicago's MLB Team Secure Power Bat Munetaka Murakami on a Substantial Multi-Million Dollar Agreement.
In a major move for their retooling roster, the American League club have officially added slugger Munetaka Murakami, completing a lucrative contract for the high-profile player.
Contract Details and Player Perks
The agreement grants a seven-figure signing bonus, payable within 30 days, in addition to salaries of sixteen million for the next season and $17M for the 2027 year.
Additionally, Murakami's 2027 salary may grow based on performance achievements in 2026:
- A seven-figure bonus for winning the Most Valuable Player award.
- $500,000 for finishing as runner-up or in third place in MVP voting.
- $250,000 for ranking between fourth and tenth.
- An identical bonus for earning the top rookie honor.
His deal provides that he cannot be assigned to the minor leagues without his permission and makes him a unrestricted player at the conclusion of the term. Extra provisions include a club-supplied interpreter and travel costs between his home country and the States.
Transfer Payment and Historical Context
As part of the acquisition, Chicago is obligated to provide a transfer fee of roughly $6.58 million to the Yakult Swallows, Murakami's longtime team in Japan's NPB. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of fifteen percent triggered salary escalators.
Murakami will become the fourth Japanese-born to represent the Chicago franchise, in the footsteps of pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), infielder Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Of note, Takatsu once managed Murakami during their time in Japan.
On-Field Accomplishments
Murakami, a left-side batter who will turn 26 on February 2nd, enters a young lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The White Sox are coming off a difficult season, finishing at the bottom in the division but representing a notable improvement from the prior campaign.
A two-time league MVP honors in 2021 and 2022, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 HRs, eclipsing the single-season record for a NPB hitter previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That feat also made him the most youthful hitter ever to achieve Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.
His most recent NPB campaign was limited to a partial schedule due to an oblique injury. Even with striking out 64 times, he hit .273 with 22 home runs and 47 RBIs.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 batting average with 246 HRs, 647 RBIs, and 977 Ks in nearly 900 games. Early in his career playing mostly at first base, he has more recently played to third.
Global Stage Success
Murakami's big-game performance were on center stage during the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In the semifinal against Mexico, he drove in a game-ending double that scored two fellow Japanese stars for a come-from-behind one-run win. The next night in the title match against the United States, he blasted a tying homer in the early innings, paving the way for Japan's 3-2 title triumph.
The power hitter is slated to be officially presented at a media availability on the coming Monday.
