Cameroon Opposition Leader Faces Legal Action Over Election Unrest, Government Declares

Political Demonstration in Cameroon
Many in Cameroon express anger over the fact that Paul Biya has won an eighth consecutive term

Cameroon's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has declared that opposition leader Tchiroma Bakary will undergo legal proceedings over claims that he instigated "aggressive post-election demonstrations".

A minimum of four demonstrators have been fatally wounded during clashes between law enforcement and opposition supporters since the electoral process on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state winning an eighth presidential mandate.

Tchiroma Bakary asserts that he won the election, a statement disputed by the incumbent party, the CPDM.

Aggressive responses by police and security officers on demonstrators have concerned the global community, with the United Nations, AU and EU urging moderation.

Minister's Allegations

Recently, the interior minister alleged Tchiroma Bakary of planning what he referred to as "illegal" protests causing the deaths, and also condemned him for announcing success in the electoral contest.

He further stated that Tchiroma Bakary's "co-conspirators responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also be prosecuted.

Vote Outcome

Paul Biya, who assumed office in the early 80s and is now the oldest serving president, secured the 12 October vote with over half of the votes, compared to 35.2% for his opponent, according to the electoral authority.

Challenger's Position

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the official announcement to bring him to court, but he had earlier announced that he would not accept a fraudulent outcome - and that he was undaunted of being detained.

On election result day, he reported that armed men used lethal force on demonstrators present near his home in Garoua, killing at least 2 individuals.

Inquiry Revealed

Earlier this week, the government official announced that an inquiry would be initiated into violent incidents prior to and following the declaration of the poll figures.

"During these attacks, some of the perpetrators lost their lives," he commented, without offering a precise figure of protesters who have been fatally injured in the clashes.

Nji further mentioned that multiple personnel of the police and military also received serious injuries.

Present Conditions

Even though the interior minister insisted the condition across the country was now stable, demonstrators continue to protest in some parts of the country, especially in Douala and Garoua, where protesters mounted barricades on that day, and ignited tyres on the roads.

Experts alert that the post-electoral violence could push the nation into a political crisis.
